In 2015 New Contemporaries and the Art Fund partnered on a one-day symposium held at ICA, London on the 28th November that gathered a broad range of New Contemporary alumni with writers, curators and other art world professionals to address the challenges facing emerging artists working in the UK today.
Chaired by Patricia Bickers and Iwona Blazwick the day brought together Basil Beatie, Matt Copson, Neil Cummings, Dexter Dalwood, Bruce Lacey, Paul Noble, Sarah Philp, Yelena Popova, Bob & Roberta Smith, Jane and Louise Wilson and Hugo Worthy.
Following on from the success of that event, we are building on our relationship with Art Fund by working together once again on a day-long symposium to be held in Liverpool at Bluecoat, on the 30th September 2016. Entitled Emerging Practices: Ensuring Development and Sustainability, this event will bring together New Contemporaries’ alumni artists with writers, curators and other art world professionals to address the critical issues affecting artists, including the visibility and longevity of emerging practices.
Contributors including Kevin Atherton, Francesco Manacorda, Joe Orr, Cliodhna Shaffrey, George Vasey and Jonathan P Watts present an informed survey of how artists’ practices can be productively challenged and developed; supported through critical discourse and exhibition spaces; as well as finding a place within plans for urban regeneration.
