b. 1994, Germany. Based in Glasgow.
Eliza Wagener is a painter. Her encounters with human gestures form the foundation for the interactions between the figures in her works. There is a tension between the question of the personalisation of these figures and the understanding of them as non-individualised gestures, as the bodies interact with each other lingering on the canvas, raising questions about the temporality, or timelessness, of her compositions.
"My practice is always shifting, morphing, changing, running in circles, stumbling and returning to itself. I am currently interested in observing interactions. For a long time, I was trying to understand the relationship between painted figures and myself painting them – between the gesture of painting and the gestures I paint – playing with particularity and openness." Eliza Wagener
Exhibitions include Linger Longer, Windowpecker, Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, Hamburg, 2025 and Windowpecking, Galerie Noah Klink, Berlin, 2024. Wagener currently receives the DAAD Grant for a master programme abroad.
