New Contemporaries is the leading organisation supporting emergent art practice from the UK's established and alternative art programmes.
Constantly evolving and developing along with the changing face of visual art in the UK, 2019 marked New Contemporaries (formerly Young Contemporaries) 70th anniversary year. Since 1949 we have consistently supported contemporary visual artists to successfully transition from education into professional practice, primarily by means of an annual, nationally touring exhibition.
New Contemporaries was relaunched in 1988 as a registered charity and limited company. You can read more about our history here. We have direct access to and ownership of our archive material from this time on. Material prior to '88 is held by the Victoria & Albert Museum’s and Tate Libraries as part of the Arts Council and ICA archives respectively.
Through a collaborative PhD with Nottingham Trent University, to research our archive and history, we have a longer-term aim to catalogue and share the archive material we hold as well as finding ways to signpost to any material held elsewhere.
We are welcoming our alumni artists who have participated since 1949, our selectors, visitors to our exhibitions, and friends to share any material they might have. Please email email@example.com to make arrangements to share any material, press cuttings, catalogues, images you may have.
