Digital embroidery circle hosted by Katarzyna Perlak

6.00-7.30pm, New Contemporaries Zoom Meeting Room

During this session, participants are invited to share their embroidery and textile works or reflections, wonders and thoughts surrounding these. Those who are not working with these media but are curious are most welcome too.

The session will be centered on embroidery threading as social practice. The selected short texts will be emailed to participants, addressing the social and political contexts of embroidery and textiles practices. These texts might provide context for discussion, however, participants do not need to have read them in order to join in:

• ‘Aesthetics Inheritances: History worked by hand’ by bell hooks

• ‘Subversive Stitch’ by Rozsika Parker.

Participants are encouraged to embroider during the session or can participate just through discussions.

Katarzyna Perlak (alumni 2017) is a Polish-born artist, based in London whose practice employs video, performance, sound and installation. Perlak’s work is driven by politics and feelings; examines queer subjectivities, migration and potentiality of affect as a tool for registering and archiving both present continuous and past historical moments. She is currently developing a ‘tender crafts’ methodology and explores the relationships between notions of utopia, hope and the concept of the ‘wish landscape’.

Perlak's background is in Philosophy, which she studied in Poland and Fine Art Media that she has studied in the UK (Camberwell College of Arts and Slade School of Fine Art). Her films have been shown widely at film festivals across Europe. She was part of the Bloomberg New
Contemporaries 2017, and shows internationally, including: Diaspora Pavilion, Venice Biennial 2017, Art Night London and Detroit Art Week.
