I don’t really know how to sign off this last blog post of my year-long residency in such an incredible building with amazing people. The residency has allowed me to have a solid place to work everyday, which as an artist in your mid-twenties is about the best thing you can be given. It’s been a superbly sustainable award, as opposed to having a monetary prize or fleeting exhibition – it’s been the privilege of having space and time.
The community of artists, galleries, artist-led spaces, and shows in Nottingham is so strong and exciting; it has led me to decide to stay for a few more months, including taking over the attic exhibition space here at
One Thoresby Street and realising my most recent works. The building has especially influenced my work and has led me to create installations for the ceilings and windows. The residency has reaffirmed my want and need to travel and work alongside new artists in new places, and to slow down the ‘getting there’ feeling, and just enjoy the uncertainty of making art at this age and time.
I want to especially thank Kirsty Ogg, Director of New Contemporaries, along with the rest of the team at New Contemporaries, Tristan Hessing, Director of One Thoresby Street, and all the artists there, especially Alice Gale-Feeny, Oliver Tirré, Lotti V Closs and Katie Gillies.
