Selectors' Comments:
James Ryan's studious painterly geometries - transparent houses of cards - are a throw-back to 50's analytic abstraction and décor. Sounds like an indictment, but they make the case for 'ding an siche': you have to see the real thing to appreciate the quality of the attention. As painter-in-residence suggested: we have to attend to the architects.

Artist's Statement:
The idea of perfection, the straight line, the unattainable absolute are all enduring human endeavours, yet human nature and natural forces dictate that the absolute is unattainable. My paintings attempt to describe the physical and emotional climate found within the man-made environment, often one of dynamics, flux and degeneration.
