Born in Tapes, in the south of Brazil in 1960, Gisel has spent most of her life in the capital Brasilia. After a degree and earlier career in statistics and mathematics, she gained her BA Fine Arts at the University of Brasilia in 1992. Between 1992-94, she combined teaching art to children from a variety of backgrounds, with working as a curator at the Museum of Coins and Gold at the central Bank of Brazil. In 1994 Gisel came to the UK and in 1997 gained her MA in Fine Arts at the University of Brighton.
